Volunteer Rosemary on the Magpas Air Ambulance welcome desk

The Magpas Air Ambulance medical team works 24/7 to keep the communities within Cambridgeshire and beyond safe, providing the most critically ill and injured patients in the region with advanced medical care when every second counts. However, they couldn't continue to save lives every day without the support from the communities within which they work.

As Volunteer's Week takes place from 3rd-9th June, Magpas Air Ambulance is shining a light on one of the charity's core groups of supporters—celebrating those who give their time and expertise to help their local lifesaving charity.

Magpas Air Ambulance is grateful to have 85 volunteers helping to provide events, monitoring collection tins, helping at the charity's headquarters in Alconbury Weald, delivering presentations, and teaching CPR! In the last financial year, over 1,670 volunteer hours were recorded!

One of Magpas Air Ambulance's volunteers is Rosemary, from St Ives. Rosemary explains, "I've been volunteering for seven years or more now in a variety of roles and I find it very rewarding indeed.

"My first role was to maintain the collection tins in and around the northern parts of St Ives—my local area—and then bringing them into the office to count the money, along with other volunteers, and ultimately get it to the bank. That soon progressed though and now I also take on various admin duties every week as well, which is really varied."

When reminiscing on her favourite volunteering moment, Rosemary shared "I think my happiest moment and the best experience was in September 2023, when Magpas Air Ambulance opened their new airbase and headquarters at Alconbury Weald. HRH The Princess Royal opened the building and a few of the volunteers were lucky enough to meet her, which was such a lovely experience."

Rosemary continues, "I'm passionate about Magpas Air Ambulance and have been for a very long time—even before I started volunteering! I have the greatest admiration for the work that the charity does and the many lives it saves, and I'm proud to be just a small part of the organisation and to know that my part goes some way to helping it.

"All the staff are lovely and so are the other volunteers, and it's just a very nice experience working here. I would certainly recommend Magpas Air Ambulance to anybody if they were thinking of volunteering, do give Magpas Air Ambulance a thought. It's a very worthwhile cause and very rewarding."

The team at Magpas Air Ambulance simply couldn't do what they do without the incredible support from volunteers, like Rosemary. Whether volunteers help in the office or attend community events, give a few hours here and there or pledge to a regular time commitment... Every person who gives up their time and skills for Magpas Air Ambulance is helping to save lives in the community.
