We're looking for people with passion, commitment and the ability to think strategically to help us pursue our vision for Magpas Air Ambulance.
Join us
Since 1971, Magpas Air Ambulance has saved lives, eased suffering and provided care that people would not otherwise have received by providing trained and equipped doctors and paramedics with critical care skills. With over fifty years of pioneering work, the organisation has developed into a leading provider of air ambulance services supporting NHS ambulance services in the East of England, East Midlands and beyond. We have been at the forefront of developing pre-hospital emergency medicine and clinical training paths for specialist doctors and paramedics in this field. Our work was recognised by the Care Quality Commission, who inspected us in 2022, and rated us as ‘Outstanding’.
We want to improve, further professionalise this area of practice with high quality clinical research to form an evidence base, and make our organisation more resilient.
Outstanding clinical care, advancing knowledge and skills, nurturing positive partnerships and sustainability all underpin our organisation and our work.
Our Board of Trustees sets this direction and drives this exciting journey, and we are looking for new trustees to join us.
Don't just take our word for it
There could be no one better to tell you more about the impact of becoming a Magpas Air Ambulance trustee than the current members of our board.
Check out the videos below to hear what John Bridge OBE DL (the Chair of our Board of Trustees) and Tom JH Bennett have to say.
Magpas Air Ambulance is a successful charity with its roots in the communities of the east. We raised over £5million in 2022 to support our activities, and spend most of this—most years, around 80% of our income is spent on direct service provision, higher than many charities. We believe we are innovative, inspiring, and supportive.
Check out our annual report and accounts, and our latest Care Quality Commission report.
Our Board of Trustees is made up of ten trustees, and is chaired by Mr John Bridge. Our governing document requires that a proportion of the Board are clinicians, maintaining the informed clinical focus of the organization.
The board has three sub-committees that meet 2-4 times each year—Audit & Assurance; Nomination & Corporate Governance; and Workforce & Remuneration. There is an expectation for trustees to join at least one subcommittee.
Trustees can be appointed for up to three consecutive 3-year terms, and it is a voluntary role. Reasonable expenses (including travel) will be reimbursed. You will need to attend bi-monthly board meetings (which last around two hours), the AGM, and any sub-committees you may be appointed to. We encourage trustees to get involved in other activities with us too.
Our trustees have a range of skills and interests; but all have a drive, passion and commitment for our vision and reflect our values—caring, dedicated, pioneering and proud.
Magpas Air Ambulance trustees should:
- Have relevant knowledge, networks and experiences
- Have good self-awareness
- Listen, be open to challenge and be able to change their minds
- Have the ability to listen and desire to hear the voices of those who are impacted by the decisions they make
Magpas Air Ambulance trustees must:
- Be generous with their skills and support
- Commit to their own development
- Be passionate about our mission
- Be able to challenge with good intent
We are currently recruiting for a doctor and a paramedic trustee, plus two non-clinical trustees. We would be delighted to welcome somebody to our board who has experienced the service of Magpas Air Ambulance first-hand, whether it be a former patient or one of their loved ones.
We encourage applications from professionals of all backgrounds and experiences. Take a look at the GettingOnBoard How to Become a Charity Trustee: A Practical Guide to support you as you consider your application.
We wish to further improve the inclusivity of our board and particularly welcome interest from women and those of BAME heritage.
