On holiday but never off duty – Paramedic performs lifesaving CPR whilst waiting to catch a plane at Stansted
The following story goes to show how Air Ambulance Paramedics and Doctors (together with their EEAST Ambulance Service Trust colleagues), rarely switch off from the crucial lifesaving job they do across the East of England and beyond.
Yesterday afternoon, the Herts Air Ambulance Air Crew flew to a serious incident at Stansted Airport, after reports of a member of the public having suffered a collapse in the main terminal building. When HEMS Dr Ash Vasireddy and HEMS Paramedic Jo Lambert arrived at the scene, a fellow off duty Magpas Helimedix Air Ambulance Paramedic (and colleague) was performing crucial CPR for the man. All three specialist medics then worked together to provide enhanced pre-hospital care for the patient, before the Herts Air Ambulance Air Crew accompanied him to Basildon Hospital.
Off duty Magpas Helimedix Paramedic Dan Read, had been at the airport with his family, waiting for the final call for his flight to go on holiday. He was dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops. When the man collapsed nearby, instinctively Dan clicked into ‘work mode’ and started providing frontline critical treatment for his fellow traveller.
This incident highlights the sheer passion all our Air Ambulance Charity Paramedics and Doctors from across the region have, for the frontline care they bring to patients suffering life-threatening illnesses or injuries… whether the medics are at work or not, as the case maybe!
