Peter JP Holden
Peter Holden has been a volunteer physician flying with air ambulance services in the UK continuously since 1998 and with Magpas Air Ambulance since 2007. His involvement in the Air Ambulance world has been more than merely operational and in 2015 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Air Ambulances in recognition of his 32 years work and influence on the political, educational and operational development aspects of air ambulance provision in the UK.
He was one of the first Diplomates in Immediate Medical Care in 1991, and proceeded in 2001 to become one of the very first Fellows by examination in Immediate Medical Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His professional experience covers change management and service delivery at doctrinal, strategic, operational and tactical levels including finding solutions to financial as well as professional issues.
Dr Holden is one of the eight doctors on the Department of Health Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response Clinical Reference Group – the final chain of medical advice to the Secretary of State and to Cobra in an emergency. He has been a national professional leader in one role or another for 36 years and was at the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, led rescue operations at the Tavistock Square bus bombing in 2005 and led for the profession in the 2009 Pandemic Flu preparations.
For 32 years he has been a partner in the practice of Dr PJP Holden & Partners in Matlock, Derbyshire- a teaching and training practice associated with the University of Nottingham and a practice judged as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. Peter is a Strategic Medical Adviser to the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
In addition to his clinical roles he has been instrumental in the development of Prehospital Emergency Medicine in the United Kingdom. Peter is the RCGP nominee on The Intercollegiate Board for Postgraduate Training in Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine and has extensive experience as a charity trustee and as a company director. For 23 years he has been a trustee of the Institute of Advanced Motorists – IAM Roadsmart, 24 years a trustee of BASICS and for 10 years a trustee of the East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme.
