Hartford based Phil has been self-employed all his life. He owned his own building company for a long time and enjoys fishing and spending time with his wife, who he has been married to for 52 years.

“I retired early and just needed something to do” Phil says, “I have my own van and am quite a handyman. I knew what I could offer to a charity and thought that volunteering would be a good thing to do with my time. I was just looking around to see what opportunities were about when I came across Magpas Air Ambulance’s website. After looking through and seeing the work they do I decided to offer to help and see if I could do anything for them.

“I’ve now been volunteering with Magpas Air Ambulance for over 4 years. I do a lot of driving for them, mainly using my van to help the charity with deliveries between their three shops. I’ve also helped to set up each shop ready for them to be opened. I basically just do anything they ask me to.

“I know I’m needed here and I really like doing my bit – If I can help out then I will. It gets me out of bed in the morning and I genuinely enjoy it.

“Magpas is a local charity that receives no government funding, so by volunteering with them you can actually make a difference in your local area and ultimately help keep the service going.

“Every time I see that orange helicopter fly over I smile to myself, because I know I’ve done my bit to help.”

As a volunteer at Magpas Air Ambulance, any time you can donate will help us keep our lifesaving service running 24/7. If Phil has inspired you to volunteer with us, head to https://magpas.org.uk/support-us/volunteering-opportunities/ to find out more.
